Signs You're a Fortress

Someone starts telling you real things — family stuff, fears — and your inner monologue says 'we're moving too fast'. Someone perfect confesses and you need 'a little time to think', where a little time is measured in geological eras. You realize you like someone back and respond by avoiding them and downgrading them in your head: 'they're mid anyway'.

The cruel efficiency of the Fortress: nobody can point to anything you did wrong. You were friendly. You were warm. The gate just never opened, and eventually they stopped knocking.

Reaching a Fortress (and Being One)

Getting close to a Fortress means watching warmth turn procedural overnight and never being told why — the warmth was real, and so is the wall. What the Fortress rarely sees: from outside, the gate dropping looks identical to rejection, even when inside it's pure fear.

If this is you, try the ten-second experiment: next time someone gets sincere, count to ten before you deflect. You don't have to open the gate. Just don't slam it reflexively. What you feel during those ten seconds is the actual answer.

What this looks like in real life

→ You're perfectly pleasant right up until someone means it — then the gate drops.

→ Someone opens up to you and your first thought is an exit strategy, not an answer.

→ You've talked yourself out of liking people as a safety procedure.

One thing to try: Next time someone gets sincere, wait ten seconds before deflecting. Just ten. See what happens if you answer instead.
