How the Hard to Love Test Works

24 everyday scenes, each with three options that are all real behaviors. Here's exactly what happens between your first answer and your verdict.

Two Layers, Two Scores

The first 12 questions live at the first meeting: the party chat, the group-chat mention, the person who texts the day after meeting you. They measure whether contact with you is pleasant and whether you leave a door open β€” that becomes your Likeability Index. Quiet answers don't cost points; frozen ones do.

The last 12 questions start the moment someone genuinely likes you: the confession your brain flags as a scam, going weirdly cold on the person you actually like, replying slower on purpose to see if they keep trying. They measure the resistance between liking you and reaching you β€” your Approach Difficulty.

Quadrants and Types

The two scores place you in one of four quadrants: Instantly Likeable, High Demand High Walls, Slow Burn, or Closed Island. The quadrant is your headline β€” the shape of your whole pattern.

Underneath, certain answers quietly build a case for one of six types β€” the specific mechanism you use to keep people at distance. Freezing out initiators builds The Ghost; flaw-listing a crush builds The Critic; ceremonial unfriending builds The Firestorm. The strongest case wins, and your six-dimension breakdown shows the rest.

Why Three Options

Every question offers exactly three behaviors: the clear, friendly one; the passive, wait-and-see one; and the cold, testing, retreating one. Real people live on that ladder β€” and picking between three recognizable moves beats rating yourself 1-to-10 on 'openness' every time.

There's no neutral cop-out option and no trick option. If you keep wishing there were a fourth choice, that's usually the answer telling on you.
